What You Should Know About Rhinoplasty before Scheduling Surgery

Alexis_BellinoThe popular and well known “nose job” is probably the best known of elective cosmetic surgeries; every year, hundreds of thousands of women (and men!) sign up to have the shape and size of their nose altered.

Before you make the appointment to go under the scalpel, there are some things to consider. Rhinoplasty is also the most repeated cosmetic surgery, meaning that people often are unhappy with the first, or even the second or third result and keep having surgery in order to achieve their ideal. Managing expectations is the first step!

The second step is knowing what the surgery itself entails. The nose is often broken and reset during a rhinoplasty, to straighten or shorten it, Cartilage may be removed, or added from material harvested from elsewhere on your body. Skin grafts may be needed for extreme cases.  If the nasal passages have been compromised, or the septum deviated, then more work must be done internally to ensure proper respiration.

The third step is being realistic about recovery. After the surgery, recovery time can vary. At least two weeks will pass before you can un-banadage completely, and pain levels will vary depending on your tolerance and the extent of work done. Swelling may be very bad for the first few days or a week, and breathing can be difficult. Bruising can remain for several weeks. You’ll look “worse before it gets better!” You also must be prepared to deal with internal or external scarring – the amount will depend on the extent of work done and the expertise of your doctor.

The fourth step is absorbing the cost of a rhinoplasty. Costs vary widely depending on location and expertise of the surgeon; most nose jobs are cosmetic and must be paid out of pocket, so be prepared for a base cost of $6,000 in most parts of the US (higher on the coasts) and add in time off work, possible modifications, and so on.

If you still want a rhinoplasty, do your homework and go for a well respected surgeon with a high satisfaction rating and few follow-up surgeries. If you aren’t sure, try Nose Secret out for a few months and see if a nose job is really what you want!
